Hennepin County elects Cedrick Frazier as its first Black county attorney

On a night where Democrats won control of Congress, Hennepin County voters made history of their own by electing State Rep. Cedrick Frazier as the county’s first Black county attorney.
Frazier defeated former acting U.S. Attorney Anders Folk on Tuesday. Unofficial results from the Minnesota Secretary of State indicate that Frazier won by 8,300 votes, receiving 257,445 votes, while Folk had 249,145.
“Tonight, as the campaign ends, the real work begins,” Frazier said in a statement.
“As your next County Attorney, I understand the responsibility that comes with leading this office. I will work every single day to uphold equal justice and strengthen public safety.”
Frazier, a DFL lawmaker and former Hennepin County public defender, said his campaign knocked on more than 200,000 doors and held three public town halls on gun violence.
Frazier will succeed Mary Moriarty, who did not seek reelection. In an interview with Power 104.7 FM before the election he said he would continue pursuing cases involving federal agent’s actions during Operation Metro Surge.
According to his campaign, Frazier is set to be sworn in Jan. 4, 2027 and plans to name a transition committee next week to help prepare for staffing, community outreach, and the office’s budget.
Kyrstin Schuette, a DFL political consultant and first-time candidate from Crystal, will take Frazier’s seat in the Minnesota House after winning the District 43A race.
