Trump goes on ‘racist’ attack against AG Ellison; Somali people

Once again Minnesota is holding space in President Trump’s mind.

During a long and at many times meandering March 26 cabinet meeting that was billed as a briefing on the war in Iran, the president turned his attention to the residents and elected leaders of the North Star State. Trump began disparaging the state’s Somali community, calling them “scammers” and saying they were “stupid” and “low IQ.”

“These people come from a crooked country, a disgusting county, one of the worst countries in the world," said Trump. "They come to our country and they rob us blind. They rob us blind because we have crooked politicians and dirty cops. The attorney general (of Minnesota) is a dirty cop.”

Trump went on to say that his statement about Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison was just his opinion, but immediately followed that up with “something should be done about him.”

Ellison said the latest Trump attacks are rooted in racism.

“Trump’s racist tirades can’t distract from the fact that his reckless and deeply unpopular war is driving up inflation, raising gas prices and making life unaffordable for Minnesotans,” said Ellison. “Here’s the truth: While Trump desperately protects the Epstein class and pardons outrageous fraudsters, I’ve been prosecuting and convicting them.”

The fraud uncovered in Minnesota is estimated to be about $9 billion in total, but President Trump more than doubled that claim saying it totaled $19 billion. Of note, before becoming president again for a second time, Trump was himself convicted of 34 felonies related to fraudulent business practices in New York.

The president’s attacks on Somali people are common. He has often denigrated those with roots in the East African nation.

The Minnesota attorney general said President Trump’s attempts to divide residents of the state will not work.

“If Donald Trump thinks Minnesotans will turn on our neighbors, he doesn’t understand this state. When he surged ICE here and killed two Minnesotans, and shot another, and terrorized thousands, we stood up for each other, not against each other,” said Ellison.
